The Learning Garden for Horticultural Science

The Learning Garden for Horticultural Science was established in the late 1970s on a small plot near the corner of Gortner and Folwell Avenues where it still stands today. Originally, the garden was used to trial annual flowering plants to test their suitability to Minnesota summers and was called the Display and Trial Garden. Each year, hundreds of annuals - including All American Selections and Proven Winners- were planted, observed, and assessed by different faculty members over the years.

Today, the purpose is largely educational. We prepare students to work in modern horticultural careers through our garden intern program. Student interns get hands-on experience in the planning and maintaining managed landscapes - but they also get exposure in the managerial aspects of operating a public garden, as well as practice conducting public outreach in horticulture. Students are often majors in the department, studying Plant Science or Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. Several courses in various departments also use this space. Classes that use this space offer students an up-close look at plants and insects creating a memorable learning experience.

The garden also hosts programs throughout the year. One of which has the Extension Master Gardeners team up with the University's Recreation and Wellness Center for their summer program, Gopher Adventures.

The Learning Garden for Horticultural Science is located on the corner of Folwell Avenue and Gortner Avenue on the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul Campus. It is adjacent to Alderman Hall and the Plant Growth Facilities.

The Learning Garden for Horticultural Science is open to the public sunrise to sunset, seven days a week. If you would like to schedule a tour or request more information, please contact us at [email protected].
