The Department of Horticultural Science is delighted to welcome Gigi DiGiacomo as our newest senior researcher in applied economics! DiGiacomo is already a distinguished member of the University community, having recently earned the CFANS Distinguished Academic P&A Staff Research Award in 2024 while in the Applied Economics department, and previously serving as the Endowed Chair in the Agricultural Systems Program from 2006 to 2008.
DiGiacomo brings a wealth of experience to the department, having earned her bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of St. Thomas followed by her master's degree in Applied Economics from UMN in 1995.
Through multi-state and multidisciplinary collaborations, DiGiacomo’s research centers on evaluating and translating scientific ideas into practical, financially feasible, real-world decision-making tools for growers, agricultural organizations, and policymakers. Her expertise lies in the economic dimensions of sustainable production and invasive species management for specialty crops. DiGiacomo’s research projects focus on integrated pest management (IPM), organic production, pollinator conservation and agricultural sustainability in the face of climate change. DiGiacomo has introduced financial management concepts to Hort3131 students for the past several years and plays an active role in the UMN Student Organic Farm’s instruction, management and organic certification.
When she’s not working, DiGiacomo spends most of her time traveling, mountain biking, reading, foraging, gardening and tending to her small flock of laying hens.
