Join us as Marvin Pritts, Horticulture & Global Development Professor at Cornell University, presents Tales from the Borderlands: Navigating the rewards and pitfalls of community engagement.
Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
Summary: Trust in universities has fallen over the past decade. Entities that study this decline suggest that improving engagement with communities is one of the best ways to counteract this loss of trust. But how can we as plant scientists engage with our communities? What are the opportunities? What are the pitfalls? Can students in horticulture classes meaningfully engage with a local community? I will present examples of successes and failures from over 40 years of attempted community engagement, will offer suggestions as to how to bring community engagement into horticulture classes, and will argue that gratitude can be an untapped motivator for learning.
